What is Spray Tanning?

Spray tanning is an artificial way of developing a temporary tan. Developed in
the 1960’s, it was found that a harmless chemical (sugar derivative) known as
Dehydroxiacetone (DHA) turned the skin brown. Commercially sold in bottle form,
spray tanning is another form of application which involves either an automated
machine or airbrush application by a tanning technician. Sunspa offers both of
these techniques as we find they both have their unique qualities. Spray tanning is
sweeping the world as people become more aware of protecting their skin from the
sun. Our products look as natural as a real tan.

Will I turn orange?

DHA products have come along way over the years. Everyone is aware of the
‘orange’ look that often follows a fake tan application. The main reason for this is an
over-concentration of DHA within the product. Skin types and conditions can also
react differently to DHA and this can affect the end result. If you are very fair, you
cannot expect to go very dark with a spray tan and still have it look natural.
An olive complexion however can go quite dark. Your expectations have to be
realistic in order to achieve a natural looking spray tan.

How long does a spray tan last?

Your skin cells naturally exfoliate themselves approximately every 5-7 days,
shedding the dermal (outer) layer of dead skin and bringing through a new layer.
Therefore your tan will only last until your skin naturally exfoliates itself.

How do I prepare for my spray tan?

Exfoliate your entire body using a body scrub and exfoliating gloves or loufer to
remove any dry or dead skin and eliminate any patchy areas. You may moisturise
on days leading up to your spray tan to improve the health of your skin (hence
slowing down the natural exfoliation process) however do not wear any moisturiser
on the day of your spray tan. Refrain from wearing deodorant or make-up as these
can interfere with the results. Refrain from wearing very tight clothing or boots
which will have your legs sweating as sweat and water are the spray tans worst
enemy.

How do I maintain my spray tan?

In order to extend the life of your tan, you need to moisturise your body every day
following your first shower. Keeping your skin moisturised will slow down the natural
exfoliation process. Tinted moisturisers are a good option as they also replenish the
colour each day. Swimming in chlorinated pools or spas or at the beach will dry
your skin out rapidly and strip your tan fast. If you look after your skin, the spray
tan will fade subtly rather than in patches.
